The Google Voice button opens voice.google.com in a new tab with the contact’s number ready to call. Nothing to install and no default app to set: it works in Chrome with the Google Voice account you are signed in to.
For a Dutch contact with the number 020 123 4567, the button opens this link (taken from the extension’s code; the + is written as %2B).

A Google Voice account. Google’s comparison table (checked 27 October 2026) lists three personal plans: free Google Voice, Voice Starter (0 a month) and Voice Standard (0 a month). All three give US numbers only and need a @gmail.com account. Voice for Google Workspace (Starter, Standard and Premier, from $10 per user a month) needs a paid Workspace subscription and offers local numbers in 14 countries or regions.
Google lists the plans, countries and features in its Google Voice plan comparison, and the call prices on voice.google.com/rates (both checked 27 October 2026). No Google Voice in your country? Use the Teams button if your company has Teams Phone, or the softphone button with the VoIP app from your own provider.
The first account you are signed in to in Chrome (the /u/0 in the link). If your Google Voice number is on a second account, sign in to that account first, or use a separate Chrome profile for work.
No. The button only starts calls. Google Voice includes unlimited SMS in the US only; to send a text, open the conversation in Google Voice itself.
Free Google Voice and the standalone plans give US numbers only. Voice for Google Workspace gives local numbers in 14 countries or regions; check Google’s table for your country before you buy it.
CallerPlugins adds nothing to the call. Every Google Voice plan includes unlimited domestic and regional calling; Google bases the region on your primary location, and its regions include North America and Europe. International calls are billed at the rates on voice.google.com/rates. The button is free for 10 uses per month, or 100 shared by your team once you confirm a company email; Pro is €4.99 per user per tool a month (excl. VAT).
