Click to call from your CRM with the softphone you already have

The softphone button hands the number to whichever calling app on your computer handles phone links. Choose tel: (Microsoft Phone Link, the 3CX app and most VoIP apps), callto: (older calling apps) or sip: with your SIP domain, and give the button your own name, such as “3CX”.

What happens when you click

The exact link each setting sends

For a Dutch contact with the number 020 123 4567, the button opens one of these links. Pick the type your calling app answers to.

SettingLink sentUsually answered by
tel: (default)tel:+31201234567Microsoft Phone Link, the 3CX app for Windows (V20) and most VoIP apps from telecom providers
callto:callto:+31201234567Older calling apps, such as 3CX clients before V20. The V20 app no longer opens callto:
sip: with a domainsip:+31201234567@sip.example.comSIP softphones that need the domain of your provider in the address
sip: without a domainsip:+31201234567SIP softphones that add the domain from their own account

Set it up in four steps

  1. Check which link type your calling app opens. The app’s settings or your provider’s help pages usually say so; tel: is the safest first try.
  2. Make that app the default for the link type. On Windows 11 go to Settings, Apps, Default apps, and choose defaults by link type (TEL, CALLTO or SIP). A link type only appears there once an app on your computer has registered it. For 3CX, see our 3CX guide: its V20 Windows app answers TEL, not CALLTO.
  3. In the CallerPlugins settings, switch on Softphone, pick the link type and, for sip:, fill in the SIP domain. Rename the button if your team calls it “3CX” or “Office phone”.
  4. Click the button next to a number in your CRM. Chrome asks once whether the site may open your calling app; tick “Always allow” so it won’t ask again.

What you need

A calling app on your computer that is set as the handler for tel:, callto: or sip: links. Your browser asks once whether it may open it.

Other ways to do this

Using HubSpot? Our step-by-step guide compares HubSpot’s own calling, a softphone, your mobile and Teams. If your company runs on Microsoft Teams Phone, the Teams button fits better than a separate softphone.

Softphone: questions

Nothing happens when I click. What now?

Most often no app is set as the default for that link type, or the app isn’t running. Open the app first, check the default app for TEL, CALLTO or SIP, and try the other link type in the CallerPlugins settings. If Chrome never asked for permission, check that it isn’t set to block the app under Chrome’s site settings.

Does it work with Aircall or CloudTalk?

Usually. If their desktop app is set to open tel: links on your computer, the button opens it. We haven’t tested every calling app.

Can I call with my mobile phone?

Yes, with Microsoft Phone Link (Windows) or iPhone/Continuity (Mac) as the tel: handler.

Does the softphone dial right away?

That depends on the app. Some start the call at once, others put the number in the dialler and wait for you to press call. CallerPlugins only hands over the number; the call itself is between your app and your provider. The button doesn’t record calls or show incoming calls.

What does a click to call extension like this cost?

The softphone button is free for 10 uses per month, or 100 shared by your team once you confirm a company email. Pro is €4.99 per user per tool a month (excl. VAT), or less billed yearly. Your call minutes stay with your own provider.
