The Zoom Phone button sends the contact’s number to the Zoom Workplace desktop app through Zoom’s own zoomphonecall:// link, and Zoom dials it straight away. Because the link is Zoom’s own, you don’t have to make Zoom the default app for phone links. You need the desktop app, signed in, with a Zoom Phone number.
For a Dutch contact with the number 020 123 4567, the button opens this link. It follows the zoomphonecall:// format in Zoom’s developer documentation for outbound calls (checked 26 October 2026; link below).

The Zoom Workplace desktop app, kept up to date and signed in, on an account with a Zoom Phone licence and phone number. A Zoom Meetings-only account can’t call phone numbers.
Zoom lists the zoomphonecall://, tel: and callto: links in its developer documentation on outbound calls. On Pipedrive, which has no Zoom Phone app of its own, our Pipedrive guide compares the button with a custom zoomphonecall:// phone link. Using HubSpot? Our HubSpot calling guide puts Zoom Phone next to HubSpot’s own calling, a softphone and Teams. If your company calls with Teams Phone instead, use the Teams button; for any other calling app, the softphone button.
No. Calling phone numbers needs a Zoom Phone licence and number on your account; Zoom Meetings on its own can’t place phone calls.
Open the Zoom Workplace app and check that you are signed in and see the Phone tab. Update the app if it is old. If Chrome never asked for permission, check that Zoom isn’t blocked under Chrome’s site settings.
Yes. Zoom also answers tel: and callto: links once you make it the default app for them. Then the softphone button works with Zoom too, but you rarely need it: the Zoom Phone button works without that setting.
Your Zoom Phone caller ID, as set in the Zoom app or by your Zoom admin. CallerPlugins doesn’t change it.
The button is free for 10 uses per month, or 100 a month shared by your team once you confirm a company email. Pro is €4.99 per user per tool a month (excl. VAT), or less billed yearly. The calls themselves run through your Zoom Phone plan.
